A resilience formula for navigating change, and how to show up for yourself when the going gets tough.

I have been in the resilience space for nearly a decade now, and over the years I have had an amazing opportunity to work with and be exposed to creative entrepreneurs, I have worked in start-ups, and as a practitioner have also worked face to face with individuals going through change, adversity, illness, and success.

On my podcast, I get to speak with people from all walks of life, men, women, celebrities, and people leading businesses. Most people when I ask them say that they believe that resilience is about our ability to push on into uncertainty when the going got tough when we want to give in. Some answers were also about our ability to be vulnerable and kind to ourselves when we are navigating change, or overcoming loss and adversity.

In my life’s journey just last year in 2021 I lost Mum on Mother’s Day, and my fur baby son Henry a few weeks after he turned 12 years old a few months later. In the image above I share an image of my family when we were all together. Both deaths were very sudden, the change in all our lives has been next level, and the grief, profound.

Benjamin Franklin says, “Change is the only constant in life. One’s ability to adapt to those changes will determine your success in life”

No matter what I have been through in my life, overcoming MS, learning how to walk again, rebuilding my mind and body, rebuilding my life after separating from a long-term relationship, going through grief after the sudden loss of my mother and fur baby in 2021. Resilience keeps evolving in its definition, for me.

I believe that resilience is our ability to lean into the unknown and discovering what we are made of.

I believe that resilience is how we show up for ourselves when we feel overwhelmed, and how we learn how to build and anchor into our own inner thermostat.

Feeling anchored and adaptable, we can shift our mindset into an elevated view, so that we know when to walk away from people or circumstances that are no longer good for us or aligned with our values and where we are wanting to go in life.

I believe that resilience is how we show up for ourselves when it is time to walk towards situations and opportunities that are important for our growth. How to find the confidence to go for it, and how to step up to be the people we know we are ready to be, to live the life we desire.

I believe that resilience is how we back ourselves when it gets hard and when we are afraid.

It is about how to walk away from projects, how to make the tough business choices that we know will benefit the health of our culture, all our community and our future.

Resilience is also how kind we are to ourselves when the going gets tough, how we back ourselves when we are navigating change. In this month’s blog, let me show the art of bending like bamboo where with flexibility you can destress, find the anchor and contentment within, feeling safe and OK amongst the chaos.

My resilience formula : A - LG + F = R

Anchor - letting go + flexibility = RESILIENCE

ANCHOR

Is who you are, what you are made of, what you stand for. It is the ability to walk away from what is not right for you. It is knowing what opportunities to move towards.

A tree analogy of bamboo is anchored, it is flexible and can bend in direct proportion to the wind, without breaking.

It is our foundation.

Your anchor is who you are, what you stand for, and knowing what you are made of. Knowing what opportunities to walk towards and what to walk away from.

Once discovered, this realisation remains with you and shows up in your reactions.

Feeling anchored is like being your own thermostat.

Capturing this elevated mindset, and maintaining flexibility, despite the change that is inevitable in your life

This ability has a direct relationship with how happy and healthy we are, and how we will show up in the world.

We awaken to a sense of guidance that is accessed with a quiet mind, and the ability to sit with ourselves and our thoughts.

We can move through life and change, knowing what to walk away from when it is not right for us, knowing what opportunities to move towards, that align with our growth.

We can observe our reactions and link them to shadows within ourselves that require light and healing.

YOUR INNER ANCHOR – ASK YOURSELF?

•                              When do you feel anchored?

•                              What are your daily rituals?

•                              What is different about you and your day when you begin anchored?

•                              What change do you notice in your reactions?

•                              In your performance and decision-making skills?

Minus

letting go

Becoming a master at letting go means letting go of the past, redundant beliefs, and stories that are not aligned with our highest good, our fullest potential, and what we are truly capable of.

We can identify and let go of our attachments, the monkey mind, disempowering words, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs.

Most importantly, the stories we tell ourselves, that keep us in a suffering state of sabotage.

Our ability to manage stress is directly related to the amount of suppressed and repressed feelings we have accumulated.

The more emotional pressure we can surrender and let go of, the less vulnerable we are to the stress response and stress-related illnesses.

Letting go is the ability to question our thoughts and stories, we can differentiate between a victim state of blame, with the ability to acknowledge how our setbacks have served us, allowing us to grow and capture the lessons.

Letting go allows us to let things come and go in our life naturally, without grasping, we can move forward into the unfamiliar. We can experience more in life and this courage fulfills us.

It is the ability to let go of judgment, be the observer in our lives, separating unnecessary dialogue from situations.

Mastering the art of letting go leads us to a path of receiving, joy, love, and anything we wish to create.

It feels familiar to think positively, and to feel joy in our daily life, as often we get stuck in the habit of worrying and assuming worst-case scenarios.

EG: I worked with a girl who wanted to thrive in her sales role, but had a fear of the sales calls and execution

We dove deeper to realise that it was her fear of being criticised that led to a lack of confidence and impacted her performance.

It was an old story that he had not let go of that any longer aligned with what she wanted to create in her life.

Creating a flexible mindset, bringing this into her awareness allowed her to create a new story and rewire her brain to adapt and change

Now she is winning awards for the leads that she makes from her sales calls.

YOUR ABILITY TO LET GO

•                              Are you good at letting go?

•                              What old stories or beliefs do you think about from the past that limit you now?

•                              When you have let something go that has not served you what did you notice?

•                              What change do you notice in your reactions?

•                              In your performance and decision-making skills?

Plus flexibility

•                Flexibility impact everything that matters

•                Our body’s ability to repair

•                How happy and resilient we are

•                How connected we feel

•                Elevate and rise above our challenges

When we are flexible, we can choose our thoughts, we can ask more questions, and react more consciously.

We no longer need to be right and can see from many perspectives.

We can let go of inner resistance and accept what is, rather than needing things to be different.

Flexibility in our mindset allows us to change our minds about old stories and beliefs that conflict with what we are wanting.

Flexibility in our body mirrors the flexibility in our mind, this can be optimised with a movement and stretch program.

Flexibility in our soul feels expansive when we are aligned, walking our talk, living a life of meaning, higher understanding, and purpose.

With an elevated state, we can see our obstacles as opportunities.

When the soul stops growing, our bodies may talk to us through ailments, symptoms, and disease.

They can be a sign or a result of us not listening to our inner guidance and intuition.

And finally, success is behind the very thing you are too scared to do. Do something that scares you daily. To make flexibility and adaptability a habit you may want to walk or drive home on new routes, brush your teeth with a different hand, and rearrange your spaces.

This is my 12th year of clear scans and every year keeps getting better and better. What we believe really is what matters, our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs are connected to our health and how we show up in our lives.

I hope you enjoy the start of this new year as an opportunity to elevate your mind, body, and soul to push yourself out of your comfort zone that little bit more, knowing that every time you choose to back yourself through change, loss, and stressful situation, the more you fulfilled you will become, reaching our fullest potential.
