Maximising motivation in November to make things happen for you.

This November, Melbourne is enjoying freedom after the longest lockdown in the world!

We have endured long-term stress that has pushed our limits, beyond normal comprehension. When we are stressed, we tend to focus on what we don’t want, worst case scenario’s and we feel unwell, unhappy, and uninspired.

So how can we maximise our ability to feel motivated, resilient, courageous, and positive?

Motivation is the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviours. It is what causes you to act. Motivation is also defined as the reasons why you are doing something, or the level of desire you must do something.

Motivation is what drives you towards a goal, gets you up in the morning, and keeps you working through a task, feeling determined to succeed, even when things get tough.

After lockdown, it can be hard to get out of our protective shell, to open our hearts to get back into life with optimism. We have created new habits that have kept us safe and have protected us from disappointment, lack of certainty, and fear-driven worry.

This is also how I felt when I hit rock bottom, living in hospital, paralysed, and faced with never walking again.

It is a mindset, and when we are stressed, tired, and feel disengaged, sometimes it feels like there is no way out. The truth is right now, we have no idea how adaptable we really are.

Resilience is our ability to lean into uncertainty with courage and motivation, to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, discovering what we are made of. All that we learn while going through adversity, is helping us to become a new version of ourselves, as we are re-shaped by our experiences.

Motivation matters, and our ability to shift our mindset from negativity into motivation, trust, joy, and optimism, is a pathway forward to snap us out of this very long rut we have all been in.

Feeling motivated is so important so that we can redirect our energy into rebuilding our minds, and lives, for a better future ahead.

MINDSET

Flexibility in our mindset impacts everything that matters. The state of mind that we create at the start of the day is how we set ourselves up for success. How we manage our stress levels, our emotions, how we perceive our hurdles, and our ability to be flexible and problem solve, is going to be key in getting us to where we want to go.

When we are stressed, we tend to focus on what we don’t want and on the negative. Are you feeling capped, drained, or unmotivated? This can be for multiple different reasons, we can fall prey to negativity, worry and we forget who we really are, what we are capable of, and what we are wanting to achieve in our lives.

The morning rituals that I love that help me to get motivated:

1.   I wake up with a glass of warm water with lemon, water is a co-factor for our body’s processes that allows us to repair, rejuvenate, think, and connect.

2.   I visualise my day before I get up, I imagine the best-case scenarios and feel what it would be like if that was my reality.

3.   To optimise my mindset, I move my body with a movement program of Pilates or an online stretch and exercise program that helps me to reconnect and de-stress. To process any feelings or emotions that are not in line with my best state. Movement is great for our posture and the health of our muscles including the heart, our gut health, and the digestive system.

4.   I wash and empty my mind daily with journaling and meditation. Not only a great ritual for the mind but did you also know that these techniques also allow you to exercise your Qi (your body’s energy system). Our Qi is connected to our biochemistry, emotions, and physical organs. Our Qi is the most malleable aspect of us to alter, these changes will automatically translate to the other layers of the body.

ELIMINATE

1.   Write down a priority goal every day and reverse engineer the steps you need to make to get to achieve the end goal. Focus on one thing and do it well, eliminate other distractions.

2.   In Trello or any other useful project management tool, keep a list called PROJECTS and all the other stuff you have going on, wish lists, ideas, put everything that you have in your mind, and categorise it onto paper. Science shows that the act of doing this helps us to close the tabs in our minds, so we can rest our minds, to stop.

3.   Eliminate tasks, the less you must do, the more you can nourish your creative abilities, you can have the headspace to be innovative in your thinking, inventive and inevitably more productive. You will see obstacles as an opportunity to grow, inspiring you to feel motivated.

4.   Make smaller changes and they will translate to the bigger ones. Drive home on different routes, brush your teeth with a different hand. This will help to rewire your brain to be more flexible, adaptable, and resilient.

ACTION

1.   Under your daily top goal, write down 3 actions that will make the most impact today that will get you closer to your goal. Don’t be busy being busy. In an optimal state of mind, you can get more done in 1 hour than you would in a cluttered, stressed, and unmotivated one, working a whole day.

2.   David Allan in his book ‘Getting things done’ recommends creating a folder called @actions in your emails where you can quickly divert all your important emails that need actioning there. You can then discard the irrelevant emails, clearing out the inbox faster. I also like to divert all emails that are newsletters into another folder called @newsletters as you’d be surprised how over 50% of your incoming emails are newsletters cluttering your inbox. Create a filter so that they automatically divert to there and check that folder weekly in case a reply or important email is amongst them. 5 years ago, it used to take me hours to read my emails. Now it takes less than one.

3.   When you know where you are headed, it can be easier to take the next step. Be clear on your overall goals, and ensure they align with your why. For every work project you want to launch, workshop the intent, problem, solution, why, what, and how. Connecting your projects into your brand messaging is going to make the biggest impact.

4.   Saying no and knowing what not to do is often more important than saying yes to everything or being busy with irrelevant tasks.

Create space in your mind and in your day, to do less and be more. Not only will you kick ass at your life professionally and personally, but you will also see yourself achieving your goals, allowing you to change your mind about what can be possible for you. This is the best way to live your happiest and healthiest life. Good luck!
