At 29, I was running my company with investors, driven and determined to succeed. On the surface, I had it together. But beneath? I was completely disconnected from my centre, running on adrenaline, chasing goals but never feeling satisfied.

Then MS hit. Complete paralysis. Rehab. Unable to walk, wash, or feed myself. Doctors said I'd probably never walk again.

Here's what most founders get wrong about resilience: they think it means pushing harder, being tougher, powering through.
But that's rigidity, not resilience.
Bamboo survives the fiercest storms not because it's rigid—but because it bends. When winds threaten to break it, bamboo grounds deeper and flexes. When the storm passes, it bounces back stronger.

Lying in that hospital bed, I had no choice but to stop the patterns that got me there. And in that forced stillness, I discovered four principles that transform how founders handle pressure:
1. Your Biology Responds to Your Mindset
The stories you tell yourself about what's possible directly impact your nervous system. When I shifted from "I have to push through this" to "I can bend with this," my entire system changed.
For founders: Are you operating from scarcity ("I have to work 80 hours or the business fails") or possibility ("I can build sustainably")?
2. Your Nervous System Determines Your Decision Quality
Chronic stress keeps you in survival mode. In survival mode, you can't access strategic thinking, creativity, or clear judgement—the exact capacities you need most as a founder.
The reality: Most founders are making million-dollar decisions from a dysregulated nervous system without realising it.
3. Flexibility Is Strength, Not Weakness
I had to completely reimagine what strength meant. It wasn't powering through pain—it was learning to dance with uncertainty while staying grounded in my core.
For founders: Pivoting isn't failing. Adjusting timelines isn't weakness. Asking for help isn't defeat. These are acts of strategic flexibility.
4. Sustainable Success Requires Regulation, Not Just Motivation
Motivation got me paralysed. What got me walking again—and what keeps me in 16 years of remission while running a thriving practice—is adaptability and nervous system regulation.
