The Bend Like Bamboo Resilience Show: Featuring Steve Carey, former news director for 7 Network, media commentator and trainer.

Welcome to The Bend Like Bamboo Resilience Show. Each week, I get to interview amazing people, who will share their inspiring stories of resilience. I dive deep into wonderful DNM’s with my very special guests, exploring their stories of how they have overcome adversity in their lives, professionally and personally.

Get ready to be inspired by their stories, golden nuggets, and actionable tools that can help us all to elevate our mindset, and be bigger than our setbacks. Within every adversity is an equal or greater opportunity. My intention for these sessions is to remind us that no matter what we are going through, we can overcome it, and discover what we are made of.

It is important to feel motivated and hopeful about the future. When we are positive we can be more creative, and innovative. Seeing our obstacles as opportunities, rising above the turbulence we can feel more ready to rebuild our mind, body, and lives after what has been a massive adjustment to 2020.

I always have such a good quality conversation when I get together with Steve Carey. He has a heart of gold and has so much experience in his industry, I am so lucky to have had him on the show.

Steve starts the interview by talking about the mental isolation that we all experienced in 2020 while in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic. Steve said he was lucky to continue working throughout lockdown because his business is in media. Having said that, the year still required mental agility and resilience that also helped Steve re-shape what and how he values in his life. It was the simple things, letting go of over-indulgence, letting in more sunshine and sea air.

“Resilience is the ability to keep taking the blows,” says Steve. “It is the ability to get back on your feet when you think you can’t. To find the reserves within, and to not be broken by adversity.” Steve said it is important to make the most out of every day, and for him, that is being present with his family.

Steve lost his dad when he was 9 years old. Within a few weeks, he quickly became a man. He went to school, helped his family, worked at a weekend job and I can see why he is such a natural giver. Steve has had a few marriages in his life, he has experienced a career change, and has experienced living in real war because of the nature of his work locations.

He recalls experiencing resilience coming from within and says it is important to remember that there is life after adversity. We are all one and the same and sometimes life brings in an event that reminds us of that.

Steve’s low point was when he blamed himself for the car accident, as he was the last person that saw his dad alive. This made him angry and it was hard to love with this pain. His turning point was when he looked within and said to himself that he could change this and that he would overcome it.

Steve’s life is now better as he says “I appreciate life now and what it has to offer more than ever before, having gone through what I have had to overcome. The night will turn to another day and an opportunity to never give up.”
