The Bend Like Bamboo Resilience Show: Featuring Laura Bennetto founder of Sea Studio.
Welcome to The Bend Like Bamboo Resilience Show. Each week, I get to interview amazing people, who will share their inspiring stories of resilience. I dive deep into wonderful DNM’s with my very special guests, exploring their stories of how they have overcome adversity in their lives, professionally and personally.
Get ready to be inspired by their stories, golden nuggets, and actionable tools that can help us all to elevate our mindset, and be bigger than our setbacks. Within every adversity is an equal or greater opportunity. My intention for these sessions is to remind us that no matter what we are going through, we can overcome it, and discover what we are made of.
It is important to feel motivated and hopeful about the future. When we are positive we can be more creative, and innovative. Seeing our obstacles as opportunities, rising above the turbulence we can feel more ready to rebuild our mind, body, and lives after what has been a massive adjustment to 2020.
Introducing Laura Bennetto
"It's the mind itself which shapes the body."
- Joseph Pilates
Pilates instructor and sea studio founder Laura Bennetto has a background in psychology and social work with extensive experience working in the field of mental and sexual health, addiction and disability. It is through this lens that she has created a studio where the mind and body come together.
Having used Pilates herself to recover from emotional and physical trauma, it is this journey of self discovery that drives her vision of a studio that helps others define and attain their own version of health and wellbeing.
Laura completed her personal training qualifications (certificate III & IV in fitness) and a certificate in Fitness Pilates Instruction in Hong Kong in 2013. After a professional break to have children Laura completed a certificate in Pilates Matwork Instruction in 2017 and a Diploma in Professional Pilates instruction through National Pilates training in 2018.
In addition to this Laura has completed an undergraduate in science Major in Psychology (University of Melbourne), a Master of Social Work (RMIT) and a diploma in Narrative therapy (La Trobe University).
I have had the privilege to know Laura and her family for nearly two decades, and as you can see she is just so beautiful inside and out. Laura has been through a lot in her life, and I was so touched by her generosity as she shared an extremely difficult experience that her and her husband Allan went through 4 years ago.
They lost their daughter at 36 weeks and had a still birth that rocked their world and turned it upside down. The pain they experienced had to be dealt with moment by moment, hour by hour. It involved a lot of healing and gentleness that led Laura to understand resilience on a whole new level.
To Laura, Pilates is her version of meditation, and being present. It allows her to align her mind and body with the use of visual techniques that enhance the body movements. It helps her to empty her mind and I can tell you personally that she is an incredible instructor. After her still birth, pilates also helped to transform Laura’s body that was very healing for her.
I loved Laura’s definition of resilience, to her it has evolved. Resilience she believes is multi-layered and complex and it looks different to different people at different stages in their lives. Resilience to Laura means to hold the space, so you can move through change and the harder times in life. Life can force you to move forward, backward, sideward and sometimes into a pause. To be gentle with yourself as you slowly adjust in your own time. Laura believes this adjustment is personal and must not be rushed and it has to be done your way. We must love ourselves at our own pace.
“To be vulnerable is strength to me” Laura.
Losing her daughter only a few weeks before her due date of birth was excruciatingly painful mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. She said “grief is not something you complete, it is a new way of being, an adjustment, acceptance. Something you endure, to grow.” On the other side, different things matter to you, and you survive. At her lowest point when she found out her daughter’s fate, she did not want to be in her body or conscious at all.
This experience led her to take some unexpected time off and he decided to study clinical pilates. Her turning point was a very gradual process, as she gave her space the space to move forward and then to fall apart. the gaps of falling apart grew smaller and she came back to life. A new version of Laura was born, and eventually she realised that she was string enough to try and again, and Allan and her had their son Olsen.
Laura loves her life and she now values more of what is important to her, focusing on what matters. She learned that she is more capable that she ever thought possible. She used to be afraid of what could happen, now she realises that her battles are apart of who she is and she has learned to really love them as part of her.
