The Bend Like Bamboo Resilience Show: Featuring Craig Harper, Exercise Scientist and high performance presenter, specialising in corporate change and human behaviour.
Welcome to The Bend Like Bamboo Resilience Show. Each week, I get to interview amazing people, who will share their inspiring stories of resilience. I dive deep into wonderful DNM’s with my very special guests, exploring their stories of how they have overcome adversity in their lives, professionally and personally.
Get ready to be inspired by their stories, golden nuggets, and actionable tools that can help us all to elevate our mindset, and be bigger than our setbacks. Within every adversity is an equal or greater opportunity. My intention for these sessions is to remind us that no matter what we are going through, we can overcome it, and discover what we are made of.
It is important to feel motivated and hopeful about the future. When we are positive we can be more creative, and innovative. Seeing our obstacles as opportunities, rising above the turbulence we can feel more ready to rebuild our mind, body, and lives.
Introducing Craig Harper
Craig Harper is one of Australia’s leading presenters, writers, and educators in the areas of health, high-performance, resilience, self-management, leadership, corporate change, communication, personal transformation, and more broadly, human behaviour.
Craig has worked as an Exercise Scientist, Corporate Speaker and Consultant, University Lecturer, AFL Conditioning Coach, Radio Host, TV Presenter, Newspaper Columnist, and successful Business Owner.
He hosts a successful Podcast called ‘The You Project’, is the author of seven books, and is currently completing a Ph.D. in Neuropsychology.
Craig Harper is the real deal, his authenticity is humbling, his thirty-five years of knowledge and experience are epic, and his insights - incredibly inspiring. I got to chin wag with him for nearly an hour, and I am so excited to share this deep dive into Craig’s mind and world with you.
Over his life, Craig has worked with individuals, groups, sports teams, and corporations and it is clear that he is a master of human behaviour. Craig has learned to ask the right questions because he believes that when we ask the right questions, we put ourselves in a more creative, solution-focused, productive, and empowered headspace. ‘When that happens, our likelihood of success increases exponentially” says Craig.
Craig told me that he is studying for his PhD and introduced metacognition that is the concept of thinking about thinking. Already I knew, we were going to get along just fine. Craig is fascinated by our reality and how subjective it is, that no one shares the same experience. He is studying the concept of how others experience us in their reality, and how vastly different that can be according to our assumptions and experience. When faced with a challenge, Craig asks himself a very important question. “Is this reality a problem? Or is this my thinking or story?”.
Our conversation reminded me how important is to check in with our thinking, our stories, and the reality that we are creating. How malleable this is, and the importance of adaptability to maximise wellbeing and happiness in our lives.
“Life is in constant communication with you,” says Craig. “Our minds, bodies, and lives are an experience of our mindset”. He says that we can divide ourselves into the following two sections, what I am (you) and what I have (stuff). When we derive our confidence and self-worth from the 'stuff’ we can fall into the trap of losing ourselves. Craig has worked with many very successful individuals who have it all but feel spiritually bankrupt.
When I asked Craig what resilience means to him, he said that it is our ability to work through the crap, and deal with discomfort. You can’t get good at what you don’t do. You can’t get good at what you avoid.” Gold.
In this interview, Craig opens up about his experience helping his Mum through 3 rounds of cancer and lung surgery. It was moving to hear that this experience created a shift within him that changed his perspective on his life and his ‘story’.
Craig learned that it is ok to be scared, it is ok to feel uncomfortable. They are experiences, not weaknesses. He said we must do what scares us. Doing what hurts and what we fear in a courageous way, is what shows us what we are made of, it stretches us. Get comfortable and crap a cup of tea as you will love this one x
