Your setbacks are a detour in the right direction

Setbacks are designed to move you; you are supposed to feel uncomfortable.

We get so used to living in our comfort zone. The brain likes the familiar, it is always looking for the safest way to keep you safe. Today I want to ask you, is it familiar for you to feel inspired, alive, and motivated? Is it familiar for you to get out of your comfort zone? Or has it become familiar to feel stuck in fear, lacking willpower and belief in yourself? Does your environment mirror what you are wanting for yourself or are you constantly feeling like nothing is going right for you?

When you are wanting to overcome stress and navigate change, mindset is key.

Flexibility in your mindset impacts everything that matters:

  • Our body’s ability to repair

  • How happy and resilient we are

  • How connected we feel

  • How we will show up in the world

  • The choices we will make

  • How anxious or relaxed we are

  • How much energy we can sustain

We know that an inflexible mindset is linked to having more anxiety, which affects our performance, the decisions we will make, and how we problem solve. This is why flexibility can boost resilience and a happier and healthier mind.

To Bend Like Bamboo is to bend with change which reduces suffering. I had to learn that the hard way on my journey. It took a slow cruel 10 days to become completely paralysed, and while it was happening, I really didn’t want it to happen. Pushing against the inevitable during that time caused me more suffering, and exhausted my energy reserves that were critical for my survival.

How I learned how to Bend Like Bamboo

I spent so much of my energy in my 20s focused on what I didn’t want, rather than what I wanted. When I was at my worst, I was entertaining worst-case scenarios, just in case they happened. It led to more stress, overthinking, worry, and inflammation which was a destructive path.

However, when I had no choice, I finally surrendered and let go of that inner resistance within, trusting in the uncertainty and possibility opened. I had more energy to problem solve and I saw more opportunities around me once I learned to focus on what I wanted, instead of what I didn’t want.

As a resilience trainer and Kinesiologist, it is my passion help to leaders and businesses to adapt to change, mastering resilience with flexibility. When we optimise growth and come out of survival, we can reach our fullest potential and discover what we are made of. We can see our obstacles as their opportunities, with a fresh perspective, allowing us to reimagine what can be possible in our mind, body, and life.

I truly believe that when given the right environment, the mind and body are capable of producing incredible results.

Right now, more than ever, we can see our obstacles as an opportunity to grow. To see our lives from an elevated perspective, allows us to access more elevated emotions such as courage, kindness, compassion, and confidence. Letting go of lower denser emotions of worry, guilt, shame, and fear.

Can you see a current setback you are experiencing in your life with fresh eyes? How could this unexpected change possibly be a detour taking you towards a new direction that feels different and unfamiliar, that is also a pathway taking you exactly where you need to move to next? When we grow and push ourselves, it is going to feel uncomfortable. If you can become familiar with getting out of your comfort zone, you are not only boosting wellness, but also walking on a path to make your dreams happen.

With an elevated mindset, we can trust, we can tap into our inner guidance and intuition which never gets it wrong. We can embrace our challenges and see our obstacles as opportunities.

See your setbacks as a gift

Imagine what you could achieve if you made getting out of your comfort zone more familiar than playing it safe? We typically choose the familiar path, particularly when we are very stressed. For some of us, it has become familiar to stay small, block pleasure, and feel unwell or exhausted.

Do you feel like you are ‘wired, scattered, and on’ all the time? A sign that you are feeling stressed, and this may have been going on for a while now.

If setbacks are designed to move us towards the next path that is right for us, we want to get comfortable with change and feel uncomfortable. We must back ourselves when we feel anxious or overwhelmed. As these are the times that matter, that will dictate our choices and, how happy and healthy we can be along the way.

Start with the smaller changes like brushing your teeth with a different hand, driving or walking on different routes - as the smaller changes translate to the bigger ones.
